If you’ve ever used one of our soaps, you already know they’re special—crafted with care, love, and the finest Australian plant oils. But how much do you really know about the story behind them? Here are five (possibly) little-known facts about The Australian Natural Soap Company that give you a glimpse into the journey of our brand.

The first ANSC soaps weren’t made in a factory—they were concocted in our very own kitchen! My husband, Anthony (a medical doctor), and I set out to create palm oil-free, detergent-free soaps using Australian plant oils. At the time, I was a speechwriter for DFAT, passionate about showcasing Australian ingredients. This humble start allowed us to focus on quality and sustainability from the beginning, and that commitment hasn’t changed.

Eleven years ago, I left my job, opened a pop-up shop in Prahran, and started selling our soaps at local markets. To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing! Friends thought I was a little mad, but these markets became the birthplace of some of our iconic products, like our Solid Shampoo Bar.

From a shop in South Melbourne Market to a cosy spot in Centreway Arcade in the city, our soaps found their way to customers across Melbourne. Wholesale was a happy accident—distributors and retailers reached out to stock our products, helping us grow even further. And then there was Korea, where a prominent retailer declared our soaps the best in the world.

Though we’ve grown, our process has stayed true to those early days in the kitchen. A manufacturing grant helped us build a purpose-built facility, allowing us to scale while maintaining the same traditional methods and quality.

We owe so much to the incredible Australian farmers who supply us with the finest plant and essential oils on the planet. Their dedication to quality and sustainability aligns perfectly with our values, and we’re proud to support local producers.
