Spring Cleaning the ANSC Way: Less Clutter, Less Waste, More Kindness

Spring in Australia is a season of renewal. The days warm, blossoms appear, and suddenly the light reveals just how much we’ve piled up in our homes over the year. Bathroom shelves stacked with bottles, cupboards crammed with sprays and detergents, laundry rooms lined with half-used tubs.

The average Australian household sends around 60 kilograms of plastic waste to landfill every year — much of it from cleaning and personal care products. Multiply that across the country, and we’re talking about over 4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with only 14% ever recycled. The rest? It sits in landfill or leaks into our environment as a permanent reminder of our overconsumption.

This isn’t spring cleaning. It’s spring contributing. And it’s why we need a different way forward.

For me, the breakthrough moment came when I realised our soaps could replace nearly all of those bottles.

We started using soap flakes for laundry, dishes, benches — even general cleaning. At first, people looked at us strangely, scooping flakes into the washing machine instead of pouring in blue liquid from a bottle. But once we made the switch, it was revolutionary. The cupboards cleared. The clutter was gone. The plastic waste stopped piling up.
