When Emma mentioned we were bringing back one of our old favourites, I actually laughed.

"Beer soap."

I looked at her and said, "Beer... soap?"

She smiled and said, "Yep! We've made it before. People love it."

Now, if you've worked at The Australian Natural Soap Company for even a little while, you quickly learn that there's usually a good reason behind every ingredient. So naturally, I had questions.

Why beer? What does it actually do? Does your skin end up smelling like a brewery? (Thankfully... no.)

So I did what I always do when something surprises me — I went down a research rabbit hole. And what I found was actually pretty interesting.

So... Why Would Anyone Put Beer In Soap?

Beer has been around for thousands of years, but it's not just made from water. Traditional beer is brewed from barley, hops and yeast — ingredients that naturally contain compounds like polyphenols (plant antioxidants), amino acids and B vitamins. Scientists have been studying these ingredients for years because of their potential benefits for skin, particularly the compounds found in hops. Research suggests these natural compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, although more research is still needed to understand how they work in skincare products.

That doesn't mean beer soap is a miracle product.

But it does explain why natural soap makers have been experimenting with beer for decades.

What Happens When Beer Becomes Soap?

Here's the clever part. Beer isn't poured straight into the mould and called a day. Before soap is made, the beer is prepared so the alcohol and carbonation are removed. This leaves behind the parts soap makers actually want to work with.

One of the biggest reasons beer is loved in cold-process soap isn't because of the alcohol — it's because of the natural sugars. Those sugars help create a richer, creamier lather. Many artisan soap makers describe beer soap as producing a denser foam than water-based soap, giving it that rich feeling when you wash your hands or step into the shower.

Olive Oil: The Heart Of The Bar

Every ANSC soap starts with one ingredient we absolutely love — olive oil. Once olive oil goes through the traditional soap-making process (called saponification), it becomes sodium olivate. It's what gives the bar its gentle cleanse while helping your skin feel soft instead of tight afterwards. If you've ever used a Castile soap before, you'll already know how beautifully creamy olive oil can feel.

Beer: More Than Just A Fun Idea

Beer is definitely the ingredient everyone notices first. But it isn't there just because it's different. Beer naturally contains proteins, amino acids and compounds from hops and barley. Researchers have found that hops are especially rich in antioxidant polyphenols, which have been studied for their potential skin-supporting properties. While there isn't enough evidence to claim beer soap itself delivers these benefits directly, these ingredients are one reason beer has attracted so much interest in skincare research.

After reading way more about beer than I ever expected to, I think I finally understand why people get excited when this bar comes back. It's not because people want to wash themselves with beer. It's because they appreciate a soap made with interesting, traditional ingredients that each bring something unique.

My Biggest Surprise?

I expected beer soap to be a bit of a gimmick. Instead, I found a long history of artisan soap makers using beer because they genuinely enjoy working with it.

The science doesn't say beer soap is magic, and we'd never claim that. What it does say is that beer contains naturally interesting ingredients — especially hops — that researchers continue to study, while soap makers love the rich lather the natural sugars help create.

I still can't believe one of my now favourite soaps started with someone saying, "What if we put beer in it?" But after learning more... I'm completely sold.

Maybe Emma knew what she was talking about all along.
