What Winter Is Actually Doing To Your Skin

What Winter Is Actually Doing To Your Skin
You feel it before you see it. The tightness across your cheeks after five minutes outside. The dry patches that appear out of nowhere. Hands that drink moisturiser and still feel like sandpaper an hour later.
It's not in your head. Winter is genuinely hard on your skin — and most of the products people reach for in response are quietly making it worse.
Here's what's actually going on, and what we built for it.

The double attack nobody talks about
Most people blame the cold. But the cold is only half the problem.

Cold air is dry air. Low temperatures mean low humidity, and low humidity means the air is actively pulling moisture out of your skin every time you step outside. Your skin barrier — the thin lipid layer that sits on the surface and keeps moisture in — takes a hit every time you walk to the car.
Then you walk inside. And the heating kicks in.
Warm, artificially heated air is just as drying as the cold air you just escaped. Your skin barrier is now being attacked from both sides: stripped by the cold when you're outside, dehydrated by central heating when you're in. On top of that, most people take longer, hotter showers in winter — which feels restorative, but strips the skin barrier even further.
By the time you lather up with your regular body wash, your skin is already compromised. And most body washes are about to make it significantly worse.

The body wash problem

Commercial body wash is built around synthetic detergents — sulphates, primarily — that are extremely effective at removing oil from surfaces. Which sounds fine, until you remember that the oil they're removing includes the natural lipids your skin barrier is made of.
In summer, your skin can largely recover. Sebum production is higher, humidity helps, and the barrier repairs itself between washes. In winter, it can't keep up. You wash, your barrier takes a hit, it doesn't fully recover before the next shower, and the cumulative effect is the tight, dry, reactive skin that most people just accept as their winter normal.
It isn't normal. It's a product problem.

What real soap does differently

Cold-process soap made from plant oils — which is the only kind we make — works completely differently.
During saponification, the process that turns oils into soap, glycerin is produced naturally as a byproduct. In commercial body wash, that glycerin is extracted and sold separately (it's a valuable ingredient). In real cold-process soap, it stays in the bar. Glycerin is a humectant — it draws moisture from the environment into the skin rather than stripping it away.
The plant oils matter too. Olive oil, avocado oil, and the other base oils we use are rich in fatty acids that closely resemble the lipids already in your skin barrier. They clean without dismantling. They leave skin feeling genuinely different — not the tight, squeaky-clean of commercial wash, but soft, hydrated, and intact.
This difference is noticeable all year. In winter, it's stark.

The Winter Edit: six soaps built for the coldest stretch

We make these once a year, for this exact stretch of cold. Each one was chosen because it earns its place in a winter bathroom — not just for how it smells, but for what it does.

Avocado Castile is the simplest bar we make and one of the best for damaged winter skin. Two ingredients: olive oil and avocado oil. Rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, it's the bar for skin that's had enough. 100g: $14.95 · 500g: $67.27

Avocado Castile
Cedarwood is warm, woody, and quietly effective. Cedarwood oil soothes irritated skin — useful when cold wind and central heating are both working against you. A grounding bar for cold mornings. 100g: $9.95 · 500g: $44.77

Cedarwood Soap

Lemon Myrtle & Aniseed Leaf is for winter skin that's gone dull. The dried lemon myrtle leaf provides gentle exfoliation to clear the dry surface layer that builds up in the cold. Bright and citrusy — a proper reset. 100g: $12.95 · 500g: $58.27

LEMON MYRTLE
Peppermint & Lavender wakes you up and settles you down in the same breath. Peppermint clarifies, lavender calms — a good combination when your skin is both dull and reactive from the cold. 100g: $11.95 · 500g: $53.77

Peppermint & Lavender (Heritage Soap)
Sandalwood Bark is warm, conditioning, and unmistakably winter. Sandalwood has long been valued for its skin-soothing properties, and here it's paired with sweet orange and elemi for something that makes the whole bathroom smell like somewhere you'd want to stay. 100g: $14.95 · 500g: $67.27

SANDALWOOD

Australian Green Clay is the reset bar. Green clay draws out impurities and excess oil that build up from spending too much time indoors — a proper deep clean that still leaves skin feeling balanced, not stripped. 100g: $12.95 · 500g: $58.27

GREEN CLAY
